Our impact

Local government plays a vital role in driving sustainability in the built environment. At CASBE, we act as the bridge between local communities and higher levels of government.

With experience in constructing and operating buildings, and as the planning authority responsible for development approvals, councils are uniquely positioned to advocate for meaningful change at State and Federal levels.

Through more than a decade of collaboration, CASBE councils have delivered significant sustainability initiatives, including the Local Environmentally Sustainable Development (ESD) Planning Policies and the Built Environment Sustainability Assessment (BESS) tool.

“In my many years of researching urban built form sustainability, and in particular the role of land use planning, the most exciting, the most influential and the most radical action is that of creative, determined local governments and their supporters.”
